La Liga table — Standings, leading scorers from 2024-25 season

Will it be a record-growing 36th La Liga title for Real Madrid, the defending champions of Spain’s top-flight?

Barcelona are the leaders in the chase for the crown, having last won the title in 2022-23, but Real Madrid are hot on their heels and Atletico Madrid are hanging in there too.

Last season’s surprise package, Girona, have dropped out of the top-four race after finishing third in 2023-24 and are now in the mix to be relegated into the Segunda division.

Athletic Bilbao have taken their place and seek a first top-three spot since finishing second to Barca in 1997-98. Dangerous Villarreal loom just below the top four, while a rejuvenated Real Betis are also in the scrap for Champions League qualification

There has also been a former champion languishing in the relegation fight — at least for most of the season — and plenty of surprise teams in the European hunt.

Below, find the leading scorers for this season as well as the most recent standings.

Who will win La Liga 2024-25?

Barca lead Real Madrid by four points before the bitter rivals play in Barcelona on May 11 (and again in the Copa del Rey final, for your information).

That feels likely to be the game that decides the title winner, as there are no Madrid derbies left this season and Atleti have just fallen off the pace. That said, at the moment Barca can lose that game and still control their own destiny.

Who will be relegated from La Liga?

Last season saw Cadiz, Almeria, and Granada relegated, while Leganes, Real Valladolid, and Espanyol came up from Segunda Division.

Valladolid are currently in last, while Espanyol and Girona are safe for the moment with Alaves, Leganes, and Las Palmas also in a wild relegation scrap.

Looking safe now, once-mighty Valencia have spent plenty of the season in and around the bottom three, truly remarkable as Los Ches have been in La Liga since 1987-88, twice winning the league near the turn of the century. Now Carlos Corberan has them pushing for a top 10 finish as he’s done a superb job at the Mestalla.

Are there any American players in La Liga?

Two at the moment following Sergino Dest’s permanent move from Barcelona to PSV Eindhoven and Luca de la Torre leaving Celta Vigo to join MLS expansion side San Diego FC.

USMNT star Johnny Cardoso is playing regularly for Real Betis, scoring in an upset of Real Madrid on March 1, while fellow national team midfielder. U.S. youth international Diego Kochen, 18, is on the books at Barcelona B.
